Ethics

A sense of awareness shapes our working culture. We care about the society and environment our business exists in, and make an active, positive contribution.

Environment

Protecting the natural world that gives us so much, for here and now, and the future…

Nature-based

The wildlife corridor at our studio space transformed a barren, concrete patch of land into a climbing plant haven for insects and birds. That’s because every act of nature creation helps. We support environmental charity Project Seagrass that’s restoring seagrass meadows around the world – habitats that support a diversity of wildlife and sequester carbon (up to 35 times faster than tropical rainforests – accounting for 10-18% of total ocean carbon storage despite covering less than 0.1% of the seafloor).

Getting there

Most of our emissions are classified as Scope 3 emissions – that’s the carbon that comes from travelling around, using suppliers and website hosting (among much else). We’re looking to try and cut emissions by 9% each year. By getting about as sustainably as possible we can reduce our environmental impact. In 2023, we completed about 850kms of business travel by emissions-free pedal power and two out of three cars used for work travel were electric.

Diligently digital

As a primarily digital business, we can reduce any digital emissions by being diligent and efficient with how we work digitally. We’re in the midst of a digital culture change to reduce our data and energy use, helping make our little corner of the internet greener (and hopefully inspiring others to do the same).

Sharing…

Making work more sustainable calls for a whole new approach to sharing. We’re actively involved in sharing ideas and practice with the local creative sector for a creative industry that’s better for the planet, and, of course, we’re big believers in the power of stories in changing minds and behaviour. See further reading below for our environmental reports, and here are some stories we’ve recently shared…

Society

In 2023, we worked with Finnish consultants deidei and creatives ATÁA to write a diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) action plan for Stranger Collective. This work focused on understanding how our work culture and practices were contributing to DEI aspirations and aims, and then develop meaningful actions we could take to improve how we act in this area. We’re working through these actions now, and hope to be able to report on the work and impact by 2025.

At the end of each year, we select charities to donate to instead of sending Christmas gifts to our clients. Here are the charities we supported at the end of 2023:

Sustainable Food Trust
World Literacy Foundation
International Rescue Committee
